Sharing a smile on Mother's Day

A lesson I learned from my mom...Okay this one isn't quite the easiest to answer.. and without giving you my entire life story my mother is not part of my life and has not been for a majority of it. So I am going to change this to a lesson I learned from my dad... My dad is tough. And I mean phyiscally and mentally tough. I watched him have an infection in his cheek lanced without any type of novacaine. I have watched him battle Stage 3 Lymphoma and now Prostate Cancer. He doesn't give up and he's straight tough. So when I was in labor with George I kept saying I wanted to be tough like my dad. I was scared to death even just having my water broke but I knew that if I focused on the strength he has shown through his challenges I could get through it. I remained calm through my entire labor and delivery and proved to myself that I too am strong :) (PS - I had an epidural - I wanted to be tough, not a hero!).

To burn calories I...run or walk.. or lift weights.. or lift George. or hike.. I LOVE being active so anything I can do to get us outside and moving I am on it! If it's crummy out, I actually like going to the gym and really hitting it hard. I have time to focus on me and reassess my fitness goals. And I have ZERO shame in sweating at the gym. I am red faced and a hot mess when I leave that place and let me simply say that I feel awesome when I've worked that hard. I deserve to look that good :)

My best hair day was... I think I'm still waiting for it. I wore my hair long for 4 years.. but only because my brother's girlfriend owns a salon and put extensions in for me. In the last 2 weeks I cut it all off and even though there are still some extensions in, it is shoulder length and I'm part of the mom club now!!

I am grateful for... Adam's mom. She has taught me what the true love of a mother really should be like. She is a God loving, strong, capable woman who has been by my side since I started dating Adam. I am so blessed to have her in my life!

Prompts for WEEK 20 (May 21) are:
My favorite recipe is …
I believe in …
I need to set boundaries …
I began living when …

  1. We are similar in the sense of not having our mom in our life.. My mom was in my life but was 'checked out' when I was around 6. My dad... well... he is and was useless as well.. So I look towards my gma who isn't even my blood relative... She is fabulous! My MIL... well ICK.... So you are lucky that you have been blessed with having a great MIL... Enjoy it ;-)

    1. Oh Aimee! It makes me so sad to hear you didn't have either parent growing up! At least you had a gma who stepped up and took care of your wonderful self :) I think the best lesson learned was what not to be as a mother!

  2. Ha! I think it's funny you called shoulder length hair the mom club. I can't even imagine being a mom with a traditional mom bob that needs styled every day. Give me a pony tail on those days I am covered in spit up and vomit!

    1. Ha! See the photos above. I rock the pony nearly every day unless we have somewhere to be or people to see!

  3. Kristen, oh my, bless your sweet spirit, this is a BEAUTIFUL edition of Finish This. And bless your Dad for being a wonderful role model and source of strength and encouragement, what a true gentleman. Prayers for him too, I cannot imagine going through the illnesses he has had to deal with. As for the looking like a hot mess going to the gym, I'm right there with you. Only I'm usually a hot, sweaty mess during the warm-up phase. HAHA!!!!!

You're beautiful, inside and out, and a blessing to your son, husband, family and friends. What a joy you are, thanks for joining the link up and sharing your story. xo, Nicole

  4. Hi Kristen! Love reading about your Dad! He definitely sounds like "HERO" material! I am the same as you at he gym. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who's sweating like a pig. LOL

    1. Yes! He is definitely a Hero :) But don't tell him that.. He already answers his phone on occasion "supreme commander Dave..." his ego needs no help!

  5. How is your dad doing with treatments? My dad had lymphoma, and unfortunately it won, so he has been in heaven for 23 years.
I like this "finish this" idea a lot! So fun!
Reading the previous post, I do think you should do a Pleated Poppy link up someday too!
I do think of chopping my hair like you did.. every day. Haha!

    1. Awe Rachel - I am so sorry to hear about your father :( That just breaks my heart!! I might have to consider the WIWW -- as I sit working from home in sweats. It might just get the motivation going :)

  6. It is good to read how influenced you are by your dad. I was a daddy's girl even with my mom in the picture.
